This is a one day course, focussed on providing an introduction to Open Source.
Intended Audience
The course is primarily designed for managers of small businesses , school ICT teachers and interested individuals:
Course Objectives
The objective of the course is twofold; to provide an understanding of what Open Source is, how it can be used and its benefits, and then to equipe deligates with means to start to explore using Open Source for themeselves.
Course Content
Morning
- What is Open Source and where does it come from?
- How does it differ commercially from say Microsoft
- How and were is Open Source already in use?
- Whay are there different flavours of Open Source, e,g Red Hat, Ubuntu, Centos, etc
- Open Source for Small Businesses (e.g. Email Servers, File/Print Servers, VM Servers)
- Open Source For schools (e.g. LTSP Servers)
- Which one should I choose?
- Benefits over proprieartay operating systems
- Obstacles to adopting Open Source
- Realistic costs of using Open Source
- Questions and answers
Afternoon
The after lunch session consists of more a detailed review of the actual Linuix Operating System and practical demontrations of various Open Source systems, including:
- Overview of the operating system itself, including the filesystem
- How and where to get a copy of an Open Source Operating System (show Internet sites)
- Different types of Installation
- How to perform an initial operating system installation (demonstration)
- How to install an application onto an Open Source System (demonstration)
- How to become an Open Source expert - introduction to getting stuck in behind the scene
- How and where to get help with Open Source (how to use forums etc)
- Questions and answers
